Our layover in Dubai flew by, and before we knew it, we were en route to our primary destination: DELHI, INDIA!

Emirates round 2 was not as stellar as round 1, but it was still pleasant (who are we kidding, we slept the entire flight!). After the cabin doors closed, an announcement on the PA instructed all passengers who wear contact lenses to cover their eyes. Why, you ask? Because the flight attendants were about to walk down the aisles spraying massive amounts of DEET. Good thing we decided to take the malaria pills.

After deplaning in Delhi, we were given VIP treatment at the airport, thanks to Abhishake. His “uncle” works in immigration and was able to help us bypass the long lines. Side note: we’ve been in Delhi less than 24 hours and one thing we’ve observed is that EVERYONE is an aunt, uncle, brother, sister, etc. – you get the idea. When we exited the airport, it was crowds of people waiting like you’ve never seen. We quickly found Abhishake, his parents, brothers, and numerous other family members waiting for us and bearing beautiful bouquets of flowers. After a lot of hugs, photos, introductions, and cramming all humans + 15 pieces of luggage into multiple cars, it was off to the hotel. Delhi driving is exactly what you see in the movies. Cars, rickshaws, motorcycles weaving all over the road and within centimeters of each other. Literally, no one drives in the lanes. Insanity. You just have to take a back seat, close your eyes, and hope for the best.

We arrived at our hotel, the ITC Maurya, which is where all of the state department heads stay when visiting Delhi (see photo of Diplomatic themed Christmas tree). We were originally scheduled to stay at a different hotel in Delhi, however at the last minute, Abhishake was able to secure two suites at the ITC for the Carman family (again, a hookup from an “uncle”). Upon arrival at the hotel, officials raise the hood of your car for inspection, and search the inside. Luggage is unloaded and placed through X-ray machines, and all guests must walk through metal detectors (we both got the pat down today!). We are told these precautions started after the Mumbai bombing several years ago.

The property is beautiful – lush gardens and modern rooms. It also features some of the best restaurants in Delhi, including Tian, where we ate last night with Abhi and his youngest brother, Aaryan, who is a doll. Aaryan goes by “Janu” pronounced “John-ooh” which is what the baby and love of the family is called.

We are so appreciative of the hospitality that was shown to our family upon arriving in Delhi. While we have met Abhi’s family when they visited Texas, the experience of arriving in their country was more than we could have ever imagined!

Coming tomorrow: our shopping trip at Rajouri Garden for everyone’s wedding outfits!
